El Día de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated primarily by people of Mexican heritage living in the United States and Canada. The celebration occurs on the 1st and 2nd of November, in correlation with the Catholic All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. Traditions include but are not limited to building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, figurines, photos and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. Many believe that during this holiday, it is easier for the souls of the departed to visit the living.
