Claudio Jimenez Quizpe: Was born on July 20, 1959 in the tiny village of Allccamenca, Ayacucho. His first language is Quechua, the language of the Inca people. His father, Florentino Jimenez Toma, one of the most famous artisans in Peru, taught Claudio the art of Retablo making. The entire Jimenez family is widely respected in and out of Peru, for the dedication to preserve, study, and develop the tradition of Retablo making. Claudio's older brother Nicario has been credited with influencing the transformation of the Retablo from a purely Indian amulet and ceremonial item to folk-art made for sale.

The celebration occurs on the 1st and 2nd of November, in correlation with the Catholic All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. Traditions include but are not limited to building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, figurines, photos and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. Many believe that during this holiday, it is easier for the souls of the departed to visit the living.
